The jackpot prize pool for this, the 23rd single rollover draw and the 25th rollover in total, included £8,917,762 (62.0%) rolled over from the previous lottery, in addition to the original jackpot prize pool of £5,461,162 (38.0%).

The next table displays the draw order, revised frequencies and the last prior appearance of each of the 7 balls.

Comments:

• The draw used ball set 1 in the Arthur machine and the average main Lotto prize was £37.08. One in every 54.2 main Lotto tickets won a prize (=1.84% of players).
• If all 13,983,816 ticket combinations were additionally purchased for the main Lotto game, they would have made a loss of £6,290,975.
• The prior history of the main Lotto jackpot ticket included 2 wins totalling £20.
• This was the first ever midweek rollover draw, so it smashed many records for a midweek draw:
  • Highest ticket sales.
  • Highest number of 3-match winners.
  • Highest total number of winners.
  • Largest individual jackpot prize.
  • Largest average individual prize.
  • Highest prize pools in all categories.

• Camelot incorrectly calculated the individual jackpot prize (their figure is £1 too high) - here's the calculations:

  Camelot officially admitted this error in their calculations some 2 months after the draw. Apart from the "obvious" mistake of rounding up instead of down, the error may have been a result of not rounding down the 45% of sales to the nearest 10p, which would give these figures:

  Camelot say the 10p round down rule does still apply, but that the fault lay with the external auditors, who made their second mistake in less than a month with the jackpot prize. Camelot honoured the extra £1 that was paid out to both of the jackpot winners.
• This was the first time that the Arthur machine had been used in 5 consecutive draws.
• I failed to match any numbers on my first and fourth tickets, but matched two numbers on each of my second and third tickets. It therefore extended my awful losing run to exactly 40 draws.
• A 5+bonus prize of £60,012 won by a ticket bought in the South Tyneside area expired and was added to the Good Causes fund.
• Unclaimed prizes from this draw expired at 11.00pm GMT on Monday 29th December 1997 and have been added to the National Lottery Distribution Fund.
