Lotto debut's three additional draws

On Saturday 18th May 2002, Camelot (rather pointlessly) decided to change the name of the main UK lottery to "Lotto", spending £28.2m doing so in the process.

To celebrate this, an additional three 6 from 49 (no bonus ball) draws took place on Saturday 18th May 2002, albeit outrageously well after the already over-long 50-minute lottery TV show on BBC 1. Anyone buying a ticket for Saturday's main "Lotto" draw (and this includes subscribers, who finally get automatic entry into a main draw promotion - about time too !) had their 6 numbers also automatically entered into the three additional draws at no additional cost (so £1 bought an entry into each of the four draws).

The three additional draws only had one prize each: a £4m jackpot, which will be shared if more than one person wins the jackpot in a particular draw. The additional £12m required to fund this has surprisingly come from "Camelot's own operating expenses".
